Three Florida residents were killed in a devastating crash in Miami Lakes earlier this month. The accident occurred on April 8 on a busy stretch of Miami Lakes Drive near the intersection with North Miami Lakeway Road. According to a local news report, just after 1:00 a.m. the driver of a Nissan Altima lost control of the vehicle, hit a wall, and ended up wrapped around a light pole. When police arrived at the scene, they were unable to remove the victims from the wreckage of the badly damaged car, although it was clear that all three occupants had been killed by the initial impact.

The wrecked car was taken to the medical examiner’s office, along with the victims’ bodies inside it. According to the news report, none of the occupants was wearing seat belts when the accident occurred, and police believe that speed played a role in the cause of the crash.

The Increased Danger of Late-Night and Early-Morning Driving

Driving at night is often more dangerous than daytime driving, and a resident quoted in the news report told the reporter that the section of road where the fatal accident occurred is especially dangerous in the overnight hours. The low light and poor visibility make one reason that the danger is increased at night. Drivers are also more likely to be tired or fatigued during the overnight hours. Additionally, intoxicated driving is more common at night. All of these factors combine to demonstrate that drivers should use the utmost caution when traveling at night or in the early morning.

The Dania Beach community that has been recovering from the death of one of their own residents at the hands of a hit-and-run driver may soon obtain some relief as authorities are one step closer to finding the perpetrator and holding them responsible. Police caught a break in the case after recovering a crucial piece of evidence from the crash and making contact with a suspected driver of the maroon Ford F-150 that was allegedly involved in the crash.

According to a CBS Miami report and the Broward County sheriff’s office, the victim of the hit-and-run was a 57-year-old Dania Beach resident who was hit by the truck on March 26 at approximately 7:25 p.m as he was walking home to a trailer park near Griffin Road at 26th Avenue after having dinner with a friend. According to witnesses, the driver of the pickup simply sped off after he hit the man, who was not at a crosswalk when he was hit. Since the man was not at a crosswalk, the driver of the car may not have been subject to criminal charges if he had stopped and called the police, but because he failed to stop he could possibly be criminally tried for homicide for his role in the accident.

Earlier this month, one man was killed and two others injured in what appears to be a failure-to-yield accident in Coral Springs, Florida. According to one local news source, the accident occurred on Coral Ridge Drive, near the intersection of Wiles Road.

Evidently, the driver of a Honda Fit was traveling south on Coral Ridge Drive. He attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Wiles Road when another motorist in a Chevy Corvette crashed into him. The driver of the Honda Fit was immediately taken into the hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead by hospital workers. The two men in the Chevy Corvette were also taken to the hospital, but their injuries were much less serious and they are both expected to make a full recovery.

At this early juncture, it is unclear what caused the accident. However, one of two possibilities is likely. Either the driver of the Honda Fit failed to yield as he made the left turn in front of the Corvette, or the Corvette was traveling in excess of the speed limit, potentially losing his right-of-way.

Earlier this month in Miami-Dade County, an accident between a BMW car, a minivan, and a Miami-Dade County bus sent two people to the hospital. According to a news report by NBC Miami, one of the two people who were hospitalized was a five-year-old girl.

Evidently, the BMW was stopped and waiting at a red light at the intersection of NE 135th St. and West Dixie Highway when it was rear-ended by the minivan. The force from the collision sent the BMW spinning into the intersection, where it collided with the side of the Miami-Dade County bus that was heading south on West Dixie Highway. When emergency crews responded to the scene, the roof of the BMW needed to be cut off before the occupants could be extracted.

The BMW had five people inside, two of whom were seriously injured and taken to the hospital for urgent care. The three others in the BMW suffered only minor injuries. The two people in the minivan also suffered minor injuries. No one on the bus was hurt. All three people in the back seat of the BMW were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Earlier this month near Key Biscayne, an accident between a car and two bicyclists claimed the life of one of the bicyclists and sent the other to the hospital with critical injuries. According to a local news report, the accident occurred in the early-morning hours, around 5:30, when the driver was returning from a nightclub.

Evidently, the driver was in the eastbound lanes of Crandon Boulevard when he looked down briefly to change the song on his iPhone. As he did so, he collided with the two bicyclists. Rather than immediately stopping and seeing if the victims needed assistance, the man continued driving back to his parents’ home in Key Biscayne.

Once there, he staged a robbery, smashing the rear windows of his Volkswagen with a set of golf clubs. However, he then immediately decided that he could not go through with the farce, and he called 911. The operator encouraged him to return to the scene, which he did. Once police arrived, they noticed that he had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his body, and that his eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. He was arrested and charged with DUI and manslaughter.

Just when it seemed like everyone was on the same page and had agreed that using a cell phone while driving was an unsafe and bad idea, a study was released arguing that driving while on the phone may not be as dangerous as once thought. More specifically, the study suggests that cell-phone bans are not as effective as they were once thought to be.

According to a report by Extreme Tech, a recent study looked at accident rates before and after a California cell-phone ban went into effect. The results may be surprising to some: “We find no evidence that the ban on hand-held cell phone use led to a reduction in traffic accidents.”

The study, of course, has its opposition. In fact, one study released by the University of California at Berkeley found that the exact opposite was true. However, the more recent study claims to take more factors into account, such as “weather, gasoline prices, number of drivers on the highway and traffic density, holidays, total miles driven, and ever-safer cars.”

To save money on auto insurance cost may seem impossible. Actually, there are several ways in which you can reduce your auto insurance payment, without sacrificing your coverage.

First, multiple car discounts are offered when a family insures all their vehicles with the same company. Also, if the family decides to purchase additional insurances, such as homeowner’s or life insurance, premiums may be reduced as well.

Consider buying the right amount of insurance. Auto insurance is designed to protect you in cases of major losses, a big accident or the theft of your car, for example. Having a higher deductible, or paying for minor losses yourself, could save you a lot of money in the long-run.
